Higger Tor Weasling Adventure

Weasling

The October day dawned cold, sunny and right on time, the 124th Mickleover Scouts arrived at Higger Tor, nr Hathersage, Derbyshire to meet me, Dave, from Aspire Adventure Activities. They were raring to go.

Aspire Adventure Activities provide many outdoor activities for groups, whether they be work groups, Scouts/Guides, school groups or family groups, and Higger Tor is a perfect destination for all outdoor activities.

What the heck is Weasling?

The scouts were really bubbling with enthusiasm and one question which was continually asked by the Scouts on the short walk to the start, ‘ Dave what is Weasling? They soon found out.

Higger Tor Weasling
Scout disappears into a crack under the rocks at Higger Tor

Straight away the scouts were squeezing through the holes in the rocks some headfirst, others feet first with the holes getting smaller and longer with some crevices leading to mini caves.   Even the scout leaders disappearing into them, Go on Akela!

Walkers, climbers and fell runners were surprised to see heads popping out from holes along the stretch of rocks we were working. That’s what Higger Tor Weasling days are all about though, squeezing like a weasel through the little gaps and crevices in the rocks.

The last challenge involved a descent into the ‘Chasm’ and a roped climb out through the smallest of holes. the result being huge smiles of great achievement on everyone’s face at the end.  This is why we love doing this type of work.  It’s so rewarding for both the kids and the adults.  With personal confidence boosted and fantastic goals achieved, not to mention a few scout badges earned in the process.
